CORE Education Executive Team

CORE Education is privileged to have an Executive Team (Exec Team) consisting of very talented, passionate, and devoted members. Each member of the Exec Team is responsible for a major area of CORE's activities.

The team is made up of:

Ali Hughes – CEO

Ali Hughes, CEO/General Manager

With a background in secondary school teaching and management in the UK, and with 10 years experience in tertiary education within New Zealand, Ali brings a wealth of managerial and education experience to her role as CEO of CORE.

Ali holds a Masters in Business (MBA), is a member of the New Zealand Institute of Directors and an Associate Fellow of the New Zealand Institute of Management. Ali has recently finished a nine-year stint as Chair of her local primary school Board of Trustees and is the immediate past President of the Association for Tertiary Education Management (ATEM Aotearoa).

Derek Wenmoth – Director, eLearning

Derek Wenmoth, Director E-learning

With a background as a teacher, principal, teacher educator and education policy advisor, Derek’s role at CORE perfectly combines his passion for teaching and learning together with his long held fascination with the use of technologies in education.

Derek is regarded as one of NZ education’s foremost Future Focused thinkers, and is regularly asked to consult with policy makers and government agencies regarding the future directions of NZeducational policy and practice. He coordinates the development of CORE’s annual ten trends ( that are widely referenced by educators and educational leaders.

He is a regular speaker at conferences both nationally and internationally, and maintains a blog on matters relating to e-learning and other aspects of interest to educators: Derek's Blog

In recognition of his work in this area, Derek was designated one of 2008’s “Global Six” by the George Lucas Educational Foundation, which recognises individuals making a difference in education: Global Six

Nick Billowes – Director, Development

Nick Billowes

Combining his years of teaching and management experience with a commitment to new technologies, Nick spearheaded the establishment of the organisation that was to become CORE Education Ltd.

Nick gained a national profile as the coordinator of the highly successful ICT Professional Development programme in New Zealand. As the convener of New Zealand's annual ICT conferences for teachers, which now attract international audiences, Nick has been seen as a leader of change in educational practice, particularly in support of 21st Century learning and its impact on teacher development. Nick is a recognised leader in the field of professional learning programme development including projects in Māori medium development, early childhood, and the school sector. Nick has been appointed the e-learning co-ordinator of the Ministry of Education's e-learning professional learning and development contracts. As a member of the sector reference group for cross government procurement, Nick is often engaged in development of policy and practice in this area.
